Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the growth of the teeth, Jaws and face, is in high demand. Why? Quite simply, a beautiful smile is your best possible asset. But orthodontic treatment is not just about making the best of your teeth; it is about improving the harmony of your mouth and jaws. Once you can bite together correctly you can eat more comfortably and care for your teeth and gums more easily.

As a General Dental Practitioner, how your bite affects the rest of your body has always interested me and it is common for me to recommend a Cranial Osteopath, Nutritionalist, CHEK Practitioner or Physiotherapist to aid in the progress of your treatment.

These are some of the most common reasons for referral:

  • Protruding upper teeth
  • Crowding
  • Asymmetrical alignment
  • A deep bite
  • An open bite
  • Impacted teeth
  • Cosmetic treatments
  • Neck and back pain

As a General Dental Practitioner, practicing orthodontics, I require an initial assessment in order to tailor make your treatment plan. This requires the taking of appropriate records including photos, impressions for study models and x-rays. At a second visit your treatment plan will be discussed in detail so you can make an informed decision before commencing treatment. You will be actively involved in the process before agreeing to proceed with treatment.

Fixed Braces are the most common type of braces and are often referred to as train tracks. I usually use this as the second stage of treatment after first preparing the arches with functional or orthopaedic appliances if necessary. Brackets are glued onto the teeth and connected by an active wire. The wire is usually held in place by small elastics. The wire exerts a gentle pressure so the teeth are turned or moved into position. The brackets are commonly metal and may be held in place by plain of even multicoloured elastics. For cosmetic reasons Porcelain brackets may also be used.

It is also possible to use the Invisalign system of transparent braces for cosmetic reasons (this is further explained under the cosmetic dentistry section).
